CONFIDENCE BOOSTER
YOU KNOW HONDA?
Soichiro Honda was an ordinary man. He invented a new type of piston and went to
Enthralled Honda invested his money, knowledge and total effort into constructing his new company. When the industry was nearing its completion, an earth quake devastated
Honda again built his factory. Just before commencement of production, World War II broke out and
Honda lost his factory, wealth, friends but not self-confidence. Honda built the factory for the 3rd time.
NOW YOU KNOW A “HONDA”!!
AIRCRAFT ACCIDENTS
Air France – Concorde story: -
The only supersonic passenger aircraft the Concorde met with a fatal accident in the year 2002 in France. That accident caused the entire Concorde fleet to be grounded permanently and the most cherished aircraft in the history of aviation now rests in museum only.
The factors contributed to the accident were:-
1. There were 109 passengers and crew on board the aircraft
2. To name a few passengers, there was entire 3 generations of a family, a teacher husband & wife, who saved for over 20 years to fly in Concorde for the very first time.
3. The Pilot ordered to repair the reverse engine thrusters in one of the engine just before the flight was about to take off
4. This delayed the take off by about an hour
5. Just before the flight took off, a DC 10 aircraft took off from the same run way
6. A piece of metal around 2 ft long fell off from the DC 10 aircraft’s engine
7. After the delay and repairs the Concorde was on its runway ready for take off
8. Concorde was traveling @ 320 km/hr in the runway when the flight’s tyre trod over the metal piece
9. The tyre bursts and a piece of tyre weighing 5 kgs hits the underside of the flight’s wings
10. The impact triggers a shock wave and the fuel starts to flow out of the wing
11. The tyre impact had also ruptured an electric line guiding the landing lever. The flowing fuel triggers a spark and both the left engines catch fire
12. Control tower alerts the pilot about the fire in the wings, but Concorde has already reached the 320 km/hr mark where the flight is committed to take off. No plane can abort the take off at such speeds. Moreover Concorde needs 3000 m to stop whereas the remaining airstrip was only 2000 m
13. Within seconds of take off the aircraft stalls and falls above a hotel killing 4 people in the hotel
In over 20 years of its flight Concorde has never met with any fatal accidents, apart from few ruptured tyres.
Air crafts are still the safest means of transportation. Even in the above scenario, if one watches closely all the above factors working in synchronization have contributed to the aircraft’s accident. Even if one factor was not to happen then most of the passengers could have survived.
Human error is the single most important factor that contribute to accidents.
Securities are so rigidly built that even if one fails, the other security system built will engage to prevent accidents. For a plane to meet with accident, gaps that develop in various securities that are build in the system should work in tandem [in a straight line].

B-2 STEALTH BOMBER – NORTHROP
Unlike F 117, B 2 is a stealth Bomber. It does not have the agility and flying dynamics of a fighter plane.
The entire body has a curved shape. It’s built in carbon fiber composite and titanium. Carbon fiber is stronger than steel and lighter than aluminum. The range of B 2 is an astounding 6000 miles. It has a capacity to carry 16, 2000 pound missile. On board computers make the plane aerodynamically stable. It was first unveiled in 1988. B 2 was first used in
Missile delivery is based on GPS. B 2 bombs precision is not as accurate as F 117, but considering its fire power it can cause collateral damage. One B 2 stealth bomber costs 2 billion dollar. i.e. INR 8000 Crores.
Northrop is the company that developed B 2.
F117 STEALTH FIGHTER LOCKHEED MARTIN
A stealth aircraft is one which registers the smallest cross section in radar and minimizes heat signatures.
F 117 first prototype was developed in the year Dec 1 1977 by US Aircraft and Defense component manufacturer LOCK HEED MARTIN. The plane was combat ready in the year 1981.
In case of normal fighter planes, the radar signal bounces back from plane to the radar. Then the radar catches the radio waves and can find out the speed, distance, direction and the size of the aircraft. The body of F 117 is painted in RAM [Radar Absorbent Materials]. Its body built in carbon composite materials.
Soviet in the 70's built the largest and the most powerful radar in the world. If war had broke out between the then soviet and
In case of stealth fighters the radar signals will bounce back at different angle so the ground radar stations will not locate it. The cross section will be very minimal for the enemy forces to reckon a combat aircraft.
Even though the F 117 was ready by 1981, the first time it was used in
On board, the F 117 uses only laser guided missiles. The precision is within a few inches from the target. Even the missile bay and cockpit edges have been designed in a zigzag fashion avoiding any perpendicular or right angles, to avoid radar signals from bouncing back.
